How to Select the Right Scroll Saw
The first thing that people what to know when starting with scrolling is what saw to buy. There are many things to consider whether you are buying your first scroll saw, or you are simply upgrading to a better one. Seriously considering these important aspects of a scroll saw is necessary to have an informed purchasing decision.
A saw that requires pined blades is not ideal for scroll work. So you will need standard 5″ pinless blades. Pinned blades have advantages but they cant cut small inside details cuts since you have to drill a very big hole to get the blade’s pin through.
You should also consider if changing blades is easy or not. This is because some scroll saw projects have many holes. This means that you have to remove an end of the blade from the holder and threat it through the wood, and remount it in the holder many times. Choose a saw where this process can easily be done. The best saw to use in this case is a saw with an arm that can be raised and can be held in position. This type of saw makes the process easier.
There are different speeds offered by many saws and you should not have a problem finding this feature in any price range. With many projects a slow blade speed is needed or sometimes you need to slow down the blades so that the edges of the wood will not be burned when you cut. There are some scroll saws that requires belt changing to change speeds. An electronic speed control is the best feature for a scroll saw.
If the saw vibrates, it can be very distracting when you work so it is best if you find one with minimum vibrations. By design, some saws vibrate more. The more expensive the saw that you buy, the lesser vibrations it makes. Mounting your saw on a stand, helps to reduce vibration. A sturdily mounted saw and a heavier saw combination will reduce vibration. You can buy stands for saws in many stores.
You should also consider the depth of the throat if you will be cutting very large projects. A small throat will limit how big of the piece you can swing around on the table while you cut. Spiral blades are ideal if you don’t want to rotate the work at all.
Make sure you consider the size of your table so that wood will not be hanging off the side of the scroll saw table when you work.
Most of us have a budget for a scroll saw. Buying a good use saw may allow you to get more for your money than buying a new cheap saw.
